Film Opening Research #2 - 2 Fast 2 Furious

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

  • The title shown in the opening of the movie is the “Universal” logo.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

- Lifted trucks, led on a car, people sectioning of streets, cars lined up along the street, people on dirt bikes, and loud cars.
What connotations do the images carry?

- All these images together allow the audience to understand that we are about to see illegal street racing.
How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

- The action genre is reinforced when we see all these cars pull up to a line revving their cars ready to race. The sound of all the cars revving, the music blaring, and the women cheering all add to the feeling of an intense race that’s about to happen. The lighting is dark and there are lights on from the Leds on a car and the streetlights, this adds to the feeling of it being illegal because they are doing it at night.
How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

- They establish an enigma when they show Ludacris’ character talking to Paul Walker’s character. We don’t start off by immediately seeing him, but we hear Ludacris talking to someone; then we see him pull up to the race all by himself with no hype team.
What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

- One of the strategies that is employed is opening with all the loud cars putting up cones to stop cars from driving there. This shows viewers that there is a race that is about to go down.
How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

- I believe that technology has been used effectively, the way we see all the cars shows us that only                 a certain type of people are allowed. In the movie you aren’t seeing any old beat-up cars, but we                 are seeing nice cars that are modified and loud. The use of close- up shots and zoom in shots help                 the audience feel like they are in the movie. Also, when Paul Walker’s character drives up the                     shot of his bumper to him is very well filmed.
